Actualización de Chilama / Update from Chilama – COVID19

The vice president of the community board (JD) in Chilama 2, Juan Menjivar, tells us that the community is paralyzed during this quarantine.
Some inhabitants received the $300 USD bonus from the government, but not all of them. People that usually go out to sell vegetables are staying home but are getting desperate. They have tried to encourage them, and they ask them not to watch too many news, in order to not grow alarmed. Others keep going out to sell, but they are trying to dissuade them from taking such risk. Others are still working and are grateful for that, although they have been forced to work twice as much and uncertain about getting fair compensation.
Though the members of the JD know that the mayor’s office is providing food packets, they don’t dare to leave the community to try to find out how the beneficiaries have been selected. Some say that the mayor is prioritizing those who lost their jobs, vendors and those that usually work at restaurants. They do not know if the mayor’s office is going to visit the communities.
Lastly, they tell us that they are trying to control the access of foreigners to the community and they are still hopeful that this situation is not going to last long, that they “have to hang in there as much as possible”.

El vicepresidente de la comunidad Chilama, Juan Menjívar, nos comenta que la comunidad está paralizada durante la actual cuarentena.
Algunos habitantes sí recibieron el beneficio de $300 dólares de parte del gobierno; pero no todos. Las personas que normalmente se dedican a vender verduras están quedándose en casa, pero ya se están desesperando. Se les ha tratado de dar ánimos y se les pide que no vean demasiadas noticias para no alarmarse más de la cuenta. Otras personas continúan saliendo a vender, pero intentan disuadirlas del riesgo. Hay otras personas que mantienen su trabajo y están agradecidas por eso, aunque se han visto obligadas a trabajar el doble, sin saber si se les compensará adecuadamente.
Aunque saben que la alcaldía está entregando paquetes de alimentos, los miembros de la junta directiva no se atreven a salir de la comunidad para averiguar cómo se ha elegido a las personas beneficiarias. Se dice que se está priorizando a quienes han perdido su empleo, a vendedores ambulantes y a las personas que tienen restaurantes. No saben si la alcaldía llegará a las comunidades.
Por último nos comentan que sí están tratando de controlar el ingreso de personas ajenas a la comunidad y mantienen la esperanza de que esta situación no dure mucho tiempo y que “hay que aguantar lo más que se pueda”.
