On January 24, US-El Salvador Sister Cities hosted our January Member Meeting. Over 40 people attended this event, titled Democracy at Risk: Salvadoran Elections 32 Years After the Peace Accords. Please email sistercities@gmail.com if you would like to watch the event recording.
The event included a conversation with Lorena Araujo, the current president of the Association for the Development of El Salvador, CRIPDES (US- El Salvador Sister Cities’ partner organization in El Salvador). Lorena joined the people’s struggle at a very young age, in which the main demand from the people was access to land for campesinos. When the civil war broke out in the 80s, Lorena got involved in the work CRIPDES was doing with displaced Salvadorans. CRIPDES promoted community organizing work in different refugee camps in El Salvador and beyond the Salvadoran borders. She accompanied refugees in their return to their places of origin to continue the struggle for social justice. Since that time, she has been part of different decision-making spaces promoting the defense of human rights, community organizing and environmental justice.
We started the event with a note on interpretation and language justice from our interpreters from the COMAL Language Justice Collective. We provided historical background on the war in El Salvador and the 1992 Peace Accords. Then, Lorena discussed the legacy of the Peace Accords and the current context in El Salvador, including Bukele’s re-election, threats to democracy, international solidarity, and the February elections. Then, participants were able to ask questions, ranging from the popularity of Bukele and his New Ideas party to the actions of opposition parties in response to the threats to democracy. Lastly, US-El Salvador Sister Cities staff shared ways for people to get involved in this struggle and support our work.
Below are resources we discussed during the event.
