With Your Support, CRIPDES Works with Communites Affected By Storm

The tropical storm that dumped 10 days of record breaking rainfall on Central America in October forced 50,000 people to flee their homes, caused 34 deaths and nearly $1 billion worth of damages to infrastructure and houses, and affected a total of 150,000 people in El Salvador.

In the CRIPDES regions, there were over 3160 people in San Vicente evacuated into 15 different shelters, while 750 people were evacuated in Chalatenango and over 700 in La Libertad. During the storm, CRIPDES provided health care, clothes, food and drinking water, and kits with first aid, kitchen and cleaning supplies. They also provided support in community evacuations, shelters, security, and documentation in the affected communities.
Now the CRIPDES team is working in the departments of San Vicente and La Libertad to provide kits with food and personal hygiene and psychological support to those most affected by the storm. CRIPDES is also planning to support the affected population with fixing potable water systems and latrines and improving agricultural production to make up for the crop damages. The food and health/hygeine kits will immediately benefit 2385 families in the two departments, including in the communities of Las Anonas, Rancho Grande and Taura in San Vicente, and La Laguneta, La Aguja, El Charcón, Chilama, Los Leones, La Violenta, El Peñón, Cuervo Arriba, El Campo, Santa Lucía, Las Conchitas, El Chaparral, Corralito, Buena Vista and Huisisilapa. The art therapy workshops with youth, part of CRIPDES’ psychological support project, have already begun in communities like El Charcón.

The estimated cost to finish these important flood relief projects is $77,000. With the support of the members of Sister Cities, who donated a total of $10,000 so far, CRIPDES has been able to begin. CRIPDES is working hard to fundraise the rest, in order to finish implementing the flood relief program.
