Santa Marta 5 are home – but not acquitted

Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Teodoro Antonio Pacheco, and Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega are known as the Santa Marta 5. They are community leaders and water defenders. The Santa Marta 5 were arrested on January 11, 2023 under suspicious charges and were held in pre-trial detention until September 5.

Below is a statement from ADES:

Our community leaders are in their homes.

We will fight until they are acquitted.

Santa Marta and ADES inform the country and the international community that our community leaders are finally in their homes. They were transferred in the early morning of Tuesday, September 5th by elements of the National Civil Police.

We are infinitely grateful to all the national and foreign organizations for their support, accompaniment and all their solidarity in this just struggle for the freedom of our environmentalist comrades.

Soon we will be informing details about their delicate health situation and the new actions that we will promote until we achieve their definitive freedom.

Community leaders must be absolved of the prosecution’s accusation without evidence; and the judicial process must be reversed, as it is nothing more than a manipulation of the justice system to persecute those who defend water, the environment and life seriously threatened by the government’s intentions to reactivate metallic mining.

Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Teodoro Antonio Pacheco y Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega son conocidos como los 5 de Santa Marta. Son líderes comunitarios y defensores del agua. Los 5 de Santa Marta fueron arrestados el 11 de enero de 2023 bajo cargos sospechosos y permanecieron en prisión preventiva hasta el 5 de septiembre.

A continuación se muestra un comunicado de ADES:

Nuestros líderes comunitarios ya están en sus casas.

Lucharemos hasta que sean absueltos.

Santa Marta y ADES informamos al país y a la comunidad internacional que nuestros líderes comunitarios finalmente están ya en sus casas. Fueron trasladados, la madrugada de este martes 5 de septiembre, por elementos de la Policía Nacional Civil.

Agradecemos infinitamente a todas las organizaciones nacionales y extranjeras por su apoyo, acompañamiento y toda su solidaridad en esta justa lucha por la libertad de nuestros compañeros ambientalistas.

Pronto estaremos informando detalles sobre su delicada situación de salud y las nuevas acciones que impulsaremos hasta lograr sus libertad definitiva.

Los líderes comunitarios deben ser absueltos de la acusacíon sin pruebas de la Fiscalía; y el proceso judicial debe ser revertido, pues no es más que una manipulación del sistema de justicia para perseguir a quienes defienden el agua, el medioambiente y la vida gravemente amenazados por las intenciones gubernamentales de reactivar la minería metálica.
