CRIPDES statement after Thursday plenary (25-4-20)

As we informed you before, last Thursday the Legislative Assembly overcame the presidential veto in order to have a law that protects health workers and demanding life insurance for them.

Congresspeople also said they wanted to overcome the veto to a law ensuring the return of Salvadorans stranded in different countries, before president Bukele tweeted about suspicions of COVID19 at the Legislative Assembly that created chaos and interrupted the session.

In this context, our partner organization CRIPDES has released a statement about the current situation.

CRIPDES demands:

1) Guaranteeing medical personnel all the appropriate conditions recommended by the WHO, as well as the provisions of Decree No. 620. We demand more respect for their work and solidarity with their families.

2) Respecting the dignity of people in containment centers, treating them fairly and informing them clearly and promptly of their health status. We ask that the necessary COVID19 tests to be carried out and, if they come back negative, that people be granted home quarantine to avoid further contagion and infection points.

3) Preparing a plan to guarantee the return of our Salvadoran brothers and sisters in a responsible way, following a clear health protocol that prevents possible contagions, as ordered by the Constitutional Chamber.

4) That the Executive stop promoting power abuses and intimidation by military forces in the territories and, especially, in the most impoverished communities that need to work the land to survive.
