Youth Organizing in Marianella/ Organización Juvenil en Marianella

Historically, the community of Marianella has been known for its high level of community organizing. Since its beginning, this community has worked on community development through strengthening organization with different sectors of the community.  Youth organizing has not been the exception.  31 years after its repopulation, new generations of people in Marianella continue with the spirit and commitment of having a unified and organized community. We met with members of the youth group in Marianella to know more about their work. Here we share part of our conversation.

They remarked that members of this group became involved while they were in 7^th grade- At that point there were others leading the group. Keeping historic memory alive was something interesting for them. Since then, these 7 young people have been working with youth and adolescents on workshops and community involvement processes. They emphasize that children from Marianella see the core group as leaders in the community, thus they are role models for the community.

Nowadays, this committee has been working for 7 years on community development, specifically promoting youth involvement. With the accompaniment of PROGRESO (a regional branch of CRIPDES, in Suchitoto) and ACISAM they have accomplished great improvements with community projects and workshops with youth and adolescents. Some of the projects managed by the youth group are: the community cybercafé, even though this space does not have internet access, people of all ages can come and learn how to use computers and to do homework. Another important project for the group is the community radio in Marianella. This community radio is administered by the youth group and it is at the service to the whole community.

 

Regarding workshops, the youth group create these with youth and adolescents around gender, environment, among others. Some of the areas in which the group works in include:

• Historic Memory. They coordinate to celebrate commemorations of repopulation, commemorations of different massacres in surrounding area as well as the assassination of Marianella García, and others.
• Violence Prevention. It is through community participation and recreation that the youth open spaces of sharing in community. They organize Christmas dinner, girls and boys soccer tournaments, cyclothon, community theater, and more.
• Community work. They support the work that other organizative areas do in the community, for instance the work of the women´s group, water committee, sports committee, community council, etc.
• They are promoters of recycling campaigns, cleaning campaigns, reforestation, and most importantly, raising awareness around issues of climate change.
• Gender education. They develop educative workshops of gender with girls and boys of the community with the support of external organizations.

One of the biggest challenges that the group faces in the community is that the new generations do not see the importance of sharing in community; this is due to different factors. But the vision of the youth group is to have a developed, united, and a safe community. Throughout the history of the community, it has been witnessed that community organizing is the base of every single achievement Marianella has had thus far. The safe spaces that the community has, the projects for the wellbeing of the community and others have been reached only through organizing, and the hard work of Marianella’s leadership.

Regarding her work as a member of the youth group, Ercilia Alas said:

“As members of the youth group, we like to work for the community in order to see a much better community. Despite our short time we must do the community organizing work, we always want to keep the organization and work with other areas in the community.”

La comunidad Marianella históricamente ha sido reconocida por su alto nivel de organización. Desde sus inicios esta comunidad ha trabajado en el desarrollo comunitario a través del fortalecimiento de la organización con los diferentes sectores de la comunidad. El trabajo organizativo con los jóvenes no ha sido la excepción. Después  de 31 años de su repoblación las nuevas generaciones de Marianella continúan con el espíritu y compromiso de mantener una comunidad unida y organizada. Nos reunimos con miembros del grupo de jóvenes de Marianela para conocer más sobre el trabajo juvenil, y aquí compartimos algo de lo conversado.

Actualmente hay 7 jóvenes que forman parte del comité (core group). Para el grupo es difícil mantener estabilidad y organización ya que cada miembro tiene disponiblidad limitada por trabajo y estudios. El comité se mantiene en constante búsqueda de incluir nuevos miembros al grupo. Su principal meta es involucrar adolescentes para ir generando relevo generacional.

Nos comentan que este grupo de jóvenes inició su involucramiento cuando estaban cursando el 7° grado- En aquel tiempo eran otros los líderes del grupo.  Les pareció interesante el tema de rescate de memoria histórica. Desde entonces estos 7 jóvenes han estado trabajando con jóvenes y adolescentes en procesos de formación e involucramiento comunitario. Enfatizan que la niñez de la comunidad les ven a ellos y ellas como líderes de la comunidad, por tanto como modelo a seguir en sus roles dentro de la comunidad.

Hoy en día, este comité tiene 7 años de trabajar por el desarrollo de la comunidad a promoviendo el involucramiento juvenil.  Con el acompañamiento de PROGRESO (una regional de CRIPDES, en Suchitoto)  y de ACISAM  han logrado grandes avances en temas de desarrollo de proyectos comunitarios y formación con adolescentes y jóvenes. Algunos de los proyectos gestionados por el comité de jóvenes son: el cyber café comunitario. Aunque este espacio no cuenta con acceso a internet, pero los jóvenes pueden aprender el uso de computadoras y hacer tareas. Otro proyecto importante para el grupo de jóvenes es el sonido local comunitario. El sonido local es administrado por el grupo de jóvenes y está al servicio de toda la comunidad.

En temas de formación, el grupo de jóvenes desarrolla procesos de formación con adolescentes y jóvenes de la comunidad en temas de Género, Medioambiente, entre otros. Las áreas de trabajo que tiene el grupo de jóvenes son:

• Memoria histórica. Conmemoraciones de repoblación; conmemoración de las diferentes masacres en la zona; el asesinato de Marianella García villa, entre otros.
• Prevención de violencia. A través de la participación comunitaria y la recreación para toda la comunidad se logra crear espacios de sana convivencia dentro de la comunidad. Se hacen cenas navideñas, torneos de futbol femenino y masculino, carreras de bicicletas, cine, y más.
• Trabajo comunitario. Apoyan el trabajo que realizan las diferentes áreas organizativas de la comunidad. Por ejemplo, comité de mujeres, comité de agua, comité de deportes, Junta Directiva, etc.
• Medioambiente- son promotores de campañas de reciclaje, de campañas de limpieza, campañas de reforestación y lo más importante de concientización sobre el tema con enfoque en el cambio climático.
• Educación sobre género. Desarrollan talleres educativos sobre género con niñas y niños y adolescentes de la comunidad con el apoyo de organizaciones externas a la comunidad.

Uno de los retos más grandes que enfrenta el grupo de jóvenes en la comunidad es que las nuevas generaciones no vean la importancia de convivir en comunidad, esto debido a diferentes factores. Pero la visión del grupo de jóvenes es tener una comunidad desarrollada, unida y sana.  A lo largo de la historia de la comunidad se ha constatado que la organización comunitaria es la base de todo lo que se ha logrado hasta la fecha en Marianella. Los espacios de sano esparcimiento que tiene la comunidad, los proyectos para el bienestar de la comunidad han sido solamente a través de la organización, del arduo trabajo de liderazgo de Marianella.

“Como jóvenes, nos gusta trabajar por la comunidad para ver una comunidad mucho mejor, a pesar del poco tiempo que disponemos para el trabajo organizativo comunitario, siempre queremos mantener la organización y el trabajo con las demás áreas de la comunidad” .
