Popular Education 2019 | U.S-El Salvador Sister Cities

We are once again preparing for a great popular education workshop in Cinquera.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

The week we are planning will be a combination of workshop sessions and time spent with people in several rural communities, learning about their lives, the ways they support themselves, their history, in particular of the civil war and how they organize themselves. Since popular education arises out of and is grounded in a particular social and historical context, we think that having this experience is essential to understanding what PopEd is and how we can apply it in our own situations.

Our overall plan is to use PopEd techniques to help us work together to understand some basic principles, analyze our own realities in the U.S., and develop basic plans of what we can do with this knowledge when we return home.

HOW ABOUT THE COST?

The estimated cost of $850 covers all transportation, lodging, meals, etc., in El Salvador – everything from when you come through customs at the airport until you return to the airport. You’ll be responsible for arranging your own transportation to El Salvador. We might be able to support you with (limited) scholarship funds and we can also help people who are trying to raise their own money.

HOW ABOUT THE LOGISTICS?

We will stay at a guest house in San Salvador the first and last nights of this period, and will be in Cinquera, a very pretty rural small town a few hours from San Salvador, the rest of the time.
We will pick people up at the airport when they arrive, and deliver them to the airport to depart. We’ll travel together as a group during the week.
We’ll have interpretation during the workshops, so Spanish proficiency is not necessary.
