One of the participants in the last Austin delegation wrote the following:
I was in El Salvador from June 29-July 5 with a four-person delegation representing the Austin Chapter of a grassroots organization called US El Salvador Sister Cities. We spent three days in San Salvador and three days in our sister city, Guajoyo. Guajoyo was founded on land distributed to ex-combatants when the Peace Accords were signed in 1992. The villagers of Guajoyo moved and inspired me with their generosity and humility. They are committed to the survival of their community through their committees which govern issues such as water, youth, and security. I have included pictures of the mural in their community center, their corn mill, the youth and one of the founders and a message from Archbishop Oscar Romero, assassinated in 1980. He said “If they kill me, I will be resurrected in the Salvadorean people”

Estuve en El Salvador del 29 de Junio al 5 de julio con una delegación de cuatro personas, representando al grupo de Austin de una organización de base llamada Ciudades Hermanas. Pasamos tres días en San Salvador y tres días en nuestra ciudad hermana, Guajoyo. Guajoyo fue fundada en un terreno distribuido a excombatientes una vez que se firmaron los acuerdos de paz en 1992. Las y los habitantes de Guajoyo me conmovieron e inspiraron con su generosidad y humildad. Están comprometidos con la sobrevivencia de su comunidad a través de sus comités que supervisan asuntos como el agua, juventud y seguridad.
