Quarantine extended to 45 days in El Salvador

Last night, president Bukele addressed the nation and declared that there will be 15 more days of quarantine for all Salvadorans.

Quarantine was officially declared on March 21st.

Nayib Bukele also urged police and military forces to be tougher on people violating quarantine:

I have instructed them to be tougher on people on the street. I don’t want to see people complaining when their car is taken away and they taken to the detention centers“, said Bukele.

Although these measures could be perceived as understandable, there is fear among many sectors of the population due to historic abuses of police and militar forces of El Salvador. Bukele himself went with them to the Legislative Assembly to force congresspeople to vote for a security loan he wanted, there have also been reports of restrictions to the press and, furthermore, the president has even twitted against Human Right Defenders:

Sometimes it seems that some “Human Rights” organizations are only working to achieve more deaths. When it was about criminality, I thought it was something ideological, but now they are also on the side of the virus. What are these organizations looking for?

We are all looking for respect of the Constitution and human dignity. But he does not seem to understand why anybody would contradict him.

We ask you to keep updated about the situation in El Salvador, to educate your friends about the current situation and have a rich dialogue with the Salvadoran community. But most of all, we ask you to be well and help others if you can.
