El Salvador: Hope, Change and Human Rights
A Speaking tour of Salvadoran Community Leader Rosa Centeno
USESSC is excited to announce our 2009 Midwest speaking tour featuring Rosa Centeno, president of the Association of the Communities for the Development of El Salvador (CRIPDES).
El Salvador is changing. For the first time in history, a left wing candidate has been elected president. The strength of El Salvador’s Social Movement brought Mauricio Funes to the presidency, despite widespread fraud, manipulation and fear campaigns leading up to the election. Now that Funes is in the presidency, Salvadoran communities have to both hold him accountable and defend what they have won. As Salvadoran citizens and the new government work to move the country forward, they respond to a history of corruption, an extreme economic crisis, right wing blocking to government programs and the regional threat of coup. Threats and assassinations of social and political leaders have continued, and a number of mineral mining companies have sued the Salvadoran government through CAFTA.
Our speaker, Rosa Centeno Valle, is the President of the national CRIPDES Board. She has worked with the organization for the past 20 years. Rosa oversees organizing and human rights work in over 300 rural communities that CRIPDES coordinates with in El Salvador, representing roughly 100,000 people. Rosa began work with CRIPDES as a health promoter to the wounded during the war and from there began women’s organizing. She now coordinates the CRIPDES Women’s program and the Rural Women’s Movement of El Salvador.
