Linking youth /Nuevos lazos entre la juventud

During our 2019 delegation focused on migration, participants had the opportunity to visit the Santa Marta community in San Vicente. There, SOA Watch participants Patricia Rodriguez and Beth Harris told youth about the continental summit SOMOS ABYA YALA that was being planned for December.

Thanks to this link, Douglas Cruz could participate.

Douglas told us he was the only member of the community that attended this event that took place from December 5th to December 8th and that revolved around 3 key themes: Defending territories and life, militarization and megaprojects. Patricia Rodriguez and SOA Watch financed his participation.

Attendants heard from Douglas about the sugarcane industry in the lower Lempa region, its impact on the environment and people’s health, stressing also the deforestation not only in the community but in the entire country. He also took this chance to talk about kidney failure in the area and how “there is no age for those who are affected”.

“The theme that interested me the most was the defense of territories. Most of the organization representatives (from Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador, Panama and Guatemala) talked about defending their territories and indigenous people”, said Douglas.

He added that a national summit is being planned for the first trimester of 2020.

“It was a really nice experience because one realizes that, in other places, there are other people fighting for their land and to defend life (…) We agreed and made a commitment to write something for the monthly newsletter. The theme is militarism. I already sent my piece and my perception about this issue in our communities”.

They also committed to contribute to the website in which they publish different points of view to raise awareness and contribute to society.

Como parte de la delegación de migración organizada en 2019, las personas participantes visitaron la comunidad Santa Marta, en San Vicente. Ahí, las participantes de SOA Watch, Patricia Rodriguez y Beth Harris informaron a la juventud del encuentro continental SOMOS ABYA YALA que estaba planeándose para el mes de diciembre.

Gracias a este vínculo, Douglas Cruz pudo participar en el mismo.

Douglas nos contó que él fue el único de su comunidad en este encuentro realizado del 5 al 8 de diciembre y que tenía tres ejes: Defensa de los territorios y defensa de la vida, militarización y megaproyectos. Patricia Rodríguez y SOA Watch financiaron su participación.

Las personas asistentes escucharon de voz de Douglas sobre la invasión de la caña de azúcar en la zona del bajo Lempa, su impacto en el medio ambiente y en la salud de las personas, haciendo énfasis principalmente en la deforestación que ha provocado no solo en la comunidad, sino en el país. Aprovechó para compartir la triste realidad de los problemas de insuficiencia renal en el área y que “no hay rango de edad para verse afectados”.

“El tema que más me interesó fue la defensa de los territorios. La mayoría de las organizaciones participantes (de Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador, Panamá, Guatemala) presentaron ponencias relacionadas a la defensa de los territorios y pueblos originarios”, dijo Douglas.

Asimismo, compartió que se planifica un encuentro nacional para el primer trimestre de este año 2020.

“Fue una experiencia muy bonita porque uno se da cuenta de que, en otros lugares, también hay gente que está luchando por defender sus territorios y defender la vida (…) Llegamos a un acuerdo y todos asumimos el compromiso de aportar para el boletín mensual. El tema es militarismo y envié ya mi aporte y mi percepción sobre este tema en las comunidades”.

También se comprometieron a alimentar la plataforma virtual del colectivo, en la que se publican nuevas visiones para generar conciencia y aportar a la sociedad.

Ciudades Hermanas busca potenciar el intercambio entre jóvenes en este año que inicia.
