A new group will graduate in San Vicente /Un nuevo grupo se graduará en San Vicente

Yesterday the last assembly of the year was held with the beneficiaries of the scholarship program sponsored by the Austin and Philadelphia committees. 14 out of a total of 30 young people will complete their high school studies. Several of them were accompanied by their mothers, fathers or guardians.

The participants made an evaluation of the program and analyzed in groups the impact of the current situation.

When talking about security, a part of the group said that there is more safety. Others said that there have never been any problems with gangs in their community. Other participants mentioned the violent encounters they have had with the security forces. They even mentioned the case of a woman who was arrested when she went to get clothes for her newborn, who died days later in the hospital.

One of the young men told me, at the end of the event, how a policeman once entered his house and told him that the music playing on his stereo is what gang members listen. The cop also asked for his phone, but the young man couldn’t give it to him because at that time he was in one of his online classes. That same policeman told him that he would write on a piece of paper that he would register him as MS (member of the “mara salvatrucha”). However, another day, a different police officer insulted him and told him to leave a park in a centric area. Later that day this cop told him that he acted that way because he assumes this young man belongs to the 18th street gang and that area is MS. This young man has also been forced to undress to his boxer shorts to be frisked and had his legs beaten with the cops’ boots. Nevertheless, he told me that he understands that “that’s their job”, but that they shouldn’t assume things just because of how one dresses.

 

Another issue that was touched on is that of school dropout. They shared that many people have stopped studying during the first year in one institute. Someone commented on the case of a classmate who did so to start working. He did it because his brother was captured during the exception regime and he was the breadwinner of the house. Other people said they felt that some teachers no longer had the same motivation and that sometimes they would only tell them to do whatever they wanted in the classroom. Others commented that although they did receive computers from the government, they never worked properly or, in some cases, did not even turn on.

 

Some shared the difficulty of coordinating with some community boards and other beneficiaries commented that sometimes one must be proactive and coordinate with different community structures. Eight of the 30 beneficiaries said they had participated in some type of workshop during 2022. One of the young women who will graduate this year shared how much these spaces help the person to develop their leadership and public-speaking skills.

 

Finally, the economic situation was discussed. All the groups agreed that the prices of the basic basket have risen and that this is particularly difficult in an area where there are no job opportunities.

 

 

 

UN NUEVO GRUPO SE GRADUARÁ EN SAN VICENTE

 

El día de ayer se realizó la última jornada del año con las personas beneficiarias del programa de becas que apoyan los hermanamientos de Austin y Filadelfia. 14 de un total de 30 personas jóvenes finalizan sus estudios de bachillerato. Varias de ellas fueron acompañadas por sus madres, padres o responsables.

Durante la jornada se hizo una evaluación del programa y también se analizó en grupos el impacto de la coyuntura actual.

Al hablar del tema de seguridad, una parte del grupo dijo que hay más. Otros dijeron que en su comunidad nunca ha habido problemas con las pandillas. Otras de las personas participantes mencionaron los encuentros violentos que han tenido con las fuerzas de seguridad. Incluso mencionaron el caso de una mujer que fue apresada cuando iba por ropa para su recién nacido, quien falleció días después en el hospital.

Uno de los jóvenes me contó, al final de la jornada, cómo un policía entró una vez a su casa y le dijo que la música que sonaba en su equipo de sonido era de pandillero; además, le pidió su teléfono, pero él no podía dárselo porque en ese momento estaba en una de sus clases en línea. Ese mismo policía le dijo que escribiría en un papel que quedaba fichado como MS. Sin embargo, otro día, un policía diferente lo insultó y le dijo que se fuera de un parque en una zona céntrica, y más noche le diría que lo hizo porque asume que él es 18 y esa zona es MS. Ya ha tenido que quedarse en boxers para que lo revisen y le han pegado con las botas en las piernas. Sin embargo, el joven todavía me dijo que entiende que “ese es su trabajo”, pero que no deberían asumir cosas solo por cómo uno anda vestido.

 

Otro de los temas que se tocó es el de la deserción escolar. Se habló de cuánta gente ha dejado de estudiar el primer año en uno de los institutos de la zona. Alguien comentó el caso de un compañero que tuvo que dejar de estudiar para ponerse a trabajar. Lo hizo porque su hermano fue capturado durante el régimen de excepción y era él quien solía llevar el sustento a la casa. Otras personas dijeron sentir que algunos maestros ya no tenían la misma motivación y que, a veces, simplemente les decían que hicieran lo que quisieran en el salón. Otras comentaron que, aunque recibieron computadoras, nunca funcionaron bien o, en algunos casos, ni encendieron.

 

Se compartió la dificultad de coordinar con algunas juntas directivas y otras personas beneficiarias comentaron que a veces hay que ser proactivo buscando una coordinación con otras estructuras comunitarias. Ocho de las 30 personas beneficiarias dijeron haber participado en algún tipo de taller durante el año 2022. Una de las jóvenes que se graduará este año compartió cuánto ayudan estos espacios para que la persona desarrolle su liderazgo y aprenda a hablar en público.

 

Finalmente, se discutió la situación económica. Todos los grupos coincidieron en que han subido los precios de la canasta básica y que esto es particularmente difícil en una zona donde no hay oportunidades de empleo.
