Empowerment and Autonomy of Women in Rural Communities of La Libertad

CRIPDES Sur has done great work promoting women empowerment and autonomy through the Savings and Loans groups for women. This project for rural women started back in 2014 with the financial support of OXFAM. In La Libertad, CRIPDES, in coordination with FECORACEN have joined efforts to form a Women´s Network of La Libertad. This Network is formed by the different women´s savings and loans groups from 9 different municipalities of the state of La Libertad, representing a total of around 900 to 1,000 women.
The importance of creating this network at a state level is to make visible all the organizational work of women. Also, as they have stated, being organized guarantees that women’s demands towards the government will be stronger so that these can be heard. As rural women, they are asking for more productive initiatives. Moreover, they ask for more education about women’s right in their communities.
Carmen Criollo is the president of one savings and loans group. She represents 165 women from her municipality, Comasagua. Carmen says that when CRIPDES started this project five years ago, someone came to her and asked her to look for 15 to 20 women that would be interested in being part of a group. She says that she was hesitant about joining that group. She was concerned about her money. Also she did not trust other women to save her money. But she went out to look for more women. She got the same response from other women. Some of them said that the money they had was not enough to save even a penny, or that they did not have time to meet every week. Finally, Carmen ended up having a group of 15 women that decided to try what it was about. Little by little women started to like the way of working with the group. The CRIPDES promoter visited them very often to provide follow up on their accounts, keeping the booklets in a very clean way (remember that most of the women from rural communities didn’t have the opportunity to go to school). Carmen remembers that the first time a woman came to the group to save $1,000-she got that amount because that woman had sold corn, the whole group was very happy because they knew that they could get higher loans than $50.00. Nowadays, Carmen is working with 40 women in her group. They have very strict rules in her group. Furthermore, she sees how women have changed in their daily lives. For example, they feel comfortable working with other women from the community, the meetings are not only to share the updates of their money in the group but to share their problems and their joys. Also, they are no longer shy to share their opinions during meetings.
The network aims to continue with the organization of women from rural communities, to go forward with the empowerment of women, and to strengthen women´s economic autonomy.
El empoderamiento y la autonomía de las mujeres en las comunidades rurales de la Libertad.
CRIPDES Sur ha hecho un gran trabajo promoviendo el empoderamiento y la autonomía de las mujeres a través de los grupos de ahorro y préstamo de las mujeres. Este proyecto para las mujeres rurales comenzó en el 2014 con el financiamiento de OXFAM. En La Libertad, CRIPDES en coordinación con FECORACEN han unido esfuerzos para formar la Red de Mujeres departamental. Esta red está conformada por diferentes grupos de ahorro de 9 municipios del departamento de la libertad, representando un total de alrededor de 900 a 1,000 mujeres.
La importancia de la creación de esta red a nivel departamental es para hacer visible todo el trabajo organizativo de las mujeres. También, como lo han dicho las mujeres, teniendo a las mujeres organizadas garantiza que sus demandas hacia el gobierno serán fuertes para que estas sean escuchadas. Como mujeres rurales, ellas están demandando más iniciativas productivas, además, piden que la educación sobre los derechos de la mujeres llegue a sus comunidades.
Carmen Criollo es la presidenta de uno de los grupos de ahorro y préstamo. Ella representa a 165 mujeres de su municipio, Comasagua, en la red departamental. Carmen dice que cuando CRIPDES comenzó este proyecto hace cinco años, una promotora vino a pedirle que buscara unas 15 a 20 mujeres que estuvieran interesadas en ser parte del grupo. Ella dice que ella estaba dudando sobre sí ser parte del grupo. Ella estaba con inquietud sobre su dinero. Además ella no confiaba en otras mujeres que guardaran su dinero. Pero ella salió a buscar a otras mujeres. Las respuestas de las mujeres fue la misma, la preocupación que ella tenía. Algunas de las mujeres dijeron que el dinero que ellas tenían no era suficiente ni para ahorrar un centavo, o que ellas no tenían tiempo para reunirse cada semana. Finalmente, Carmen consiguió que 15 mujeres decidieran probar sobre que se trataba el grupo. Poco a poco les gusto la forma de trabajar en el grupo. La promotora de CRIPDES las visitaba muy a menudo para darles seguimiento a las cuentas, a mantener las libretas de contabilidad ordenadas (la mayoría de las mujeres de las comunidades rurales no tuvieron la oportunidad de ir a la escuela). Carmen recuerda que la primera vez que una mujer llegó al grupo a ahorrar $1,000 -una cantidad que obtuvo de la venta de maíz, todo el grupo se puso feliz porque sabían que con ese ahorro ellas podían obtener préstamos más altos que $50.00. Ahora en día, Carmen está trabajando con 40 mujeres en su grupo. Ellas tienen reglas bien estrictas en su grupo. Además, ella ve como las mujeres han cambiado en su diario vivir. Por ejemplo, ellas se sienten cómodas trabajando con otras mujeres de la comunidad, las reuniones no son solamente para compartir las actualizaciones del trabajo del grupo con el dinero, pero también para compartir sus problemas y sus alegrías. También, las mujeres ya no son tímidas para expresar sus ideas en las reuniones.
La red tiene el objetivo de continuar con la organización de las mujeres de las comunidades rurales, de seguir con el empoderamiento de las mujeres y fortalecer su autonomía económica.
