Presidency’s legal advisor Conan Castro dismisses letter written by members of U.S. Congress

After receiving a letter from members of the U.S. Congress in which they expressed their concern about freedom of the press in El Salvador and the strained relationship between the government of Nayib Bukele and independent media, the presidency’s legal advisor Conan Castro dismissed the document.

Diario El Mundo reports that he said:

“These types of statements must be made through the official channels, that is, through the U.S. Embassy, through the ambassador, otherwise it is not an official channel but just another letter”.

Furthermore, he said to newsreporters the following words:

We are talking about ten or eleven signers out of three hundred and eighty-something senators in the United States. They do not represent even five percent of them. This means that it is not unanimous, that it is not a vision held by the government of the United States, but rather of these few senators who are possibly friends of the owner of El Faro“.
