A spike in murders in El Salvador

Just like in April last year, in the middle of lockdown, El Salvador has faced another day of a surprising spike in homicides.

LA PRENSA GRÁFICA reports:

Only this Wednesday, November 10, at least 20 murders were reported, according to the Police (PNC). Due to this, President Nayib Bukele announced that the police and the Army would patrol in the places where these murders have been registered. (On November 9), at least 12 murders were registered in different parts of the country.

This is yet another report that shatters the illusion that El Salvador experiences a long-lasting security and that the reports of disappearences are only made to hurt the government’s image.

Recently, Ivette Toledo, mother of two missing teens, Karen and Eduardo Guerrero, called for a press conference addressing this situation: “They try to blame mothers, fathers and other Salvadoran families for the serious security problems that the country has, which are the responsibility of the State” said the mother of the disappeared youth, who also regretted the statements of the Minister of Security. Last Monday, he assured that the disappearance of the Guerrero brothers was related to drugs and gangs. (X)

The relatives of disappeared try to find some closure whenever they hear reports of clandestine graves where they may find the remains of their loved ones, as it is in the case of Chalchuapa, Lourdes Colón and recently Nuevo Cuscatlán.
