Yesterday, Nayib Bukele confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus COVID-19 in El Salvador. The president has said that they have placed a “sanitary cord” in Metapán (Santa Ana).

According to Bukele, the person would have entered through a blind spot in Metapán. He explained that immigration authorities have records of his departure from the country but not of his return, so they presume that he entered “illegally.”

The patient has a migratory record that indicates that he was in Italy, one of the countries with the most cases of coronavirus.

Bukele said he regrets that “irresponsibility” could cause the loss of lives.

The president announced that, as part of 30 economic measures announced yesterday, rent payment will be suspended for three months.

However, his economic cabinet said this would only applied to those affected by the pandemic but they did not respond how those were going to be determined (X)

Prices fixation will be another measure, announced President Nayib Bukele.

Bukele stated that those who want to take advantage of the situation to raise prices or hoard the product will be confiscated and the business will be closed.

The time has come, said the representative of the World Health Organization, who indicated that he has 7,000 tests ready, which will facilitate the detection of possible contacts with the infected person.

President Bukele announced that he will present a proposal to the Legislative Assembly requesting $2 billion for the “economic reactivation”, in the midst of the National Emergency.

In addition, the president announced the closure of call centers and sweatshops, for 15 days and this period could be extended. Workers must be sent home with salary.

Since last weekend the country has been in a National Emergency and a State of Exception, because of COVID-19.

El Salvador was one of the few countries that did not yet have confirmed cases. Yesterday the Nicaraguan government also announced that they were facing their first case of the virus.
