In memory of the Salvadoran Health Personnel

DIARIO CO-LATINO reported about the event organized on October 28 by Movimiento por la Salud “Salvador Allende”/ Asociación Latinoamericana de Medicina Social (ALAMES) to commemorate the health personnel who died fighting COVID19 in El Salvador.

The Movement for Health “Salvador Allende” / Latin American Association of Social Medicine (ALAMES) rendered a memorial recognition to 142 health professionals, who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, explained the doctor, Fátima Alas.

“This ecumenical act is for these men and women, who gave their lives, attending the COVID-19 pandemic, and as ALAMES, we consider this sacrifice and that it must be recognized by the Salvadoran State.”

She added that the Government must honor the legislative decree 723, related to financial compensation for family members of health workers who died as a result of COVID-19, and atypical pneumonia, specifically between March 14 to July 23 of this year.

“As ALAMES, we consider that it must be guaranteed, and we reiterate our willingness to hand over the database as Movement for Health “Salvador Allende”, and that a unique official registry is prepared”, she added.

That “something better and coordinated” could have been done, is the opinion of Teresa Calvo, Nicole’s aunt, who noted that the death of Dr. Barahona Gálvez has affected his three children and his wife.

“I think they could have tried to give them the best prevention equipment, to clean the hospitals, because they risked thousands of lives, which have now fallen. They did not take care of them and perhaps that way they could have saved their lives. Because he not only did his work, he went where no one wanted to go, when no one wanted to volunteer, but as a good doctor he wanted people to receive treatment. He would not even come home to protect my sister and she got sick anyway. Now she is a little better but she has not come because she is emotionally devastated”.

Among the main requests of ALAMES, to honor the contribution of the medical staff who got sick with COVID-19, Dr. Alex Coreas petitioned to officially dedicate the Health Square (Plaza La Salud) to their memory.

“We consider that in view of the alteration of the processes of mourning and mourning of the relatives, attention to mental health and monitoring by the State should be a main course of action. The conditions in which the workers’ deaths occurred leave an open wound that must be taken care of. And we must not forget the application of COVID-19 detection tests, as a routine, with established dates for all health personnel, and mechanisms for home and hospital health care to avoid further complications”, said Coreas.
