Update: ETA in El Salvador

(EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

After the tragedy in Nejapa exposed once again the lack of coordination in the current civil protection system, the Salvadoran government decided to decree a “red alert” due to the arrival of the tropical storm ETA.

Its effects in El Salvador have been diverse. Strong winds are reported in several areas, but fortunately, from the lower Lempa area (historically vulnerable), the CRIPDES promoter Lurvi, reported the following at noon:

We have winds. There are no rains yet, but we are constantly monitoring. We are monitoring the river … There are no discharges (from the CEL dam).
Here there is a coordination with the different communities, communal civil protection commissions. The Santa Marta community was evacuated only for prevention. The priorities are older people, people with disabilities, women with newborns. There are established points for shelters.

We will be sharing information about the different regions in which CRIPDES works.

In the meantime, we invite you to read more about the environmental vulnerability of El Salvador and why the current government decided against signing an international agreement HERE.
