Background of threats to Womens Movement Visitacion Padilla

HONDURAS. Since June of 2009, Gladys Lanza, the Coordinator of the Woman’s Movement for Peace Visitación Padilla has received a series of threats and abuses. The last offense began on July 14th 2010, when Visitación Padilla issued a press release condemning the militarization.

The threats that continued accompanied by a series of emails written to Ms. Lanza, began to appear on August 12, 2010 at 12:10 in the afternoon.  Unidentified subjects fired shots in front of the home of Ms.  Tania Quijano, the coordinator of the Anti-Femicide campaign promoted by Visitación Padilla.   At that moment one of her children was returning home, and upon hearing the shots he parked the car without turning the engine off.  A man that had his face covered by a mask stopped in front of the car and pointed his gun directly at him.  The young man took advantage of the fact that the gunman moved towards the drivers side and accelerated the car, lightly hitting the man how was pointing the gun at him. When he as about two blocks away he realized he was being followed by a motorcycle with a driver dressed in black.  According to the information obtained, the shooters were recognized. There were four of them and they had come on motorcycles.  Two waited a certain distance away and the other two went to the site where the shots were fired.  After the occurrence, many cop cars came to the site where the motorcycle drivers identified themselves as police who were checking on a supposed robbery, but they did not show anything that proved their identity.

Tania’s house is being constantly watched, and unidentified subjects investigate the times she enters and leaves.

On August 9, 2010 Renato Rodríguez Zavala, the person in charge of moving equipment for the Woman’s Movement for Peace Visitación Padilla was the victim of an attack in the downtown of Tegucigalpa, when the policeman Luis Enrique Pineda, in civilian dress because he was off-duty shot him, supposedly because he scratched a car that was badly parked in the vicinity of the pothole know was the “Merrian hole”, in the Neighborhood Los Dolores. Renato lost his left kidney as result of the bullet, which also damaged his intestine. The policeman was stopped by a police car but was later released from the Metropolitan Police Station 1. Renato is one of the two people who were arrested with Merlyn Eguigure on November 26, 2009.

Yadira Eguigure, sister of Merli Eguigure, the organizational coordinator of Visitación Padilla, has been recieivng telephone calls coming from the number 8999-99999, in which she can only hear someone panting. Gladys Lanza received threats from that same number two months ago. For her part, Yadira is being followed and abused by vehicles with out liscense plates and tinted windows. Late at night she receives phone calls at home, and upon answering no one answers.  Her father has also been watched and followed.
