URGENT ACTION: U.S. Embassy Should Not Support Abusive Mining Company!

There must be immediate, thorough investigations into the murders, threats and harassment that have taken place in Cabanas over the last year. The U.S.'s history of intervention in El Salvador and recent attempts to influence the Salvadoran election are well known.

Recently, the U.S. Embassy criticized the National Roundtable Against Mining, denouncing their calls for investigation of the Pacific Rim Mining Co, and told them to stop calling for investigation into Pacific Rim's role in the violence in Cabanas. The U.S. Embassy should call for neutral investigations of the murders in Cabanas, not side with Pacific Rim Mining Co. These investigations must move forward with NO U.S. INTERFERENCE.

Dear Mr. Blau

Charge de Affairs of the U.S. Embassy

As a United States Citizen, I have been following the recent wave of violence and kidnappings in Cabanas over the past year. I am profoundly concerned about the kidnapping and assasination of Marcelo Rivera in June of 2009, the assasination attempt against Father Luis Quintanilla, the consistently ongoing threats against journalists at Radio Victoria, and the most recent murders of Ramiro Rivera Gomez and Dora Alicia Sorto Rodriguez in December of 2009.

United States citizens have been very concerned about the violence in Cabanas and have been calling on the Attorney General's office to do a full investigation of these cases; of the intellectual and material authors of the murders and threats, along with the potential role of the Pacific Rim Mining Corporation in promoting a situation of community tension which has led to conflict.

I encourage the U.S. Embassy to take a neutral stance on these investigations, calling on the Attorney General's Office to do a deep and thorough inquiry, which will neither presume nor deny, but instead investigate if there is a role of the Pacific Rim Mining Corporation in this violence. I hope that the US Embassy will not side with this company or with any party, but instead will call for a true investigation into these cases.

I thank you in advance for your efforts for true investigations and I hope that there will soon be justice and that the victims' lives will be protected.
