Las Anonas’ photo album – El Album de Las Anonas

Joan Brooks, head of the Philadelphia – Las Anonas committee first came to El Salvador in 1990 and she knew she wanted to come back. Once she did, she created a photo album of Las Anonas de Santa Cruz.

The album has an interesting introduction but I wanted to know more. I recently contacted her to learn more about it. These are her words:

 

This album was the means through which I came to know the families of Las Anonas.  My goal in volunteering in El Salvador was to come to know our sister community, to put names to faces and to understand how they woke up and put their feet to the ground each day after their experience of war, of being on the run in the mountains for 10 years, of attacks, hunger, fleeing, massacres.

 

Having a project gave me entry into the lives of each family. I visited each home, took their pictures, wrote down their names (often misspelling them I was embarrassed later on to realize), and asked if there was anything they might want people in their sister city, in Philadelphia, to know about their family. Can you imagine having that sacred time, space and conversation with each family??

 

I loved having the album translated and offering one per family in Las Anonas. Every now and again, someone will bring their copy out and study it.  It was important for them to know that we in Philly wanted to know them.

 

I thought the book would enable folks in Philly to put names to faces also. Though people welcomed the book, I came to understand that it was hard to really connect the names and faces except for the leaders or host families they would interact with over the duration of their delegation.

 

I cannot tell you how helpful the album has been to me over the past 22 years. For me, it is rather timeless. When I meet children, I ask who their parents are and then place them in their family in the community.

 

There was a delegation of women some time ago, maybe 10 years ago, that took pictures with the intent of updating the album.  It never came to fruition. It would be great to do it now, wouldn’t it?

Joan Brooks, presidenta del comité de Filadelfia – Las Anonas, vino por primera vez a El Salvador en 1990 y supo que quería regresar. Cuando lo hizo, creo un álbum fotográfico de Las Anonas de Santa Cruz.

El álbum tiene una interesante introducción, pero yo quería saber más, así que la contacté recientemente para conocer más al respecto. Estas son sus palabras:

El álbum fue un medio a través del cual llegué a conocer a las familias de Las Anonas. Mi propósito al ser voluntaria en El Salvador era conocer nuestra comunidad hermana, ponerle nombres a las caras y entender cómo se despertaban y paraban cada día después de su experiencia con la guerra, de estar huyendo en las montañas durante 10 años, de ataques, hambre, guindas y masacres.

Tener un proyecto me permitió entrar en las vidas de cada familia. Visité cada casa, tomé sus fotos, escribí sus nombres (a menudo con errores, según me di cuenta después con mucha pena) y les pregunté si habría algo que quisieran que la gente en su ciudad hermana, Filadelfia, supiera sobre sus familias. ¿Te puedes imaginar tener ese valioso tiempo, espacio y conversaciones con cada familia?

Amé que se tradujera el álbum y ofrecerle uno a cada familia de Las Anonas. Cada cierto tiempo, alguien saca su copia para estudiarla. Fue importante para las personas de la comunidad saber que nosotros, en Filadelfia, queríamos conocerles.

Pensé que el libro también les ayudaría a las personas en Filadelfia a ponerles caras a los nombres. Aunque la gente estuvo contenta con el proyecto, entendí luego que era difícil conectar verdaderamente los nombres y las caras, excepto por los líderes o las familias anfitrionas con las que interactuaban durante una delegación.

 

No puedo explicarte lo útil que ha sido el álbum para mí durante los últimos 22 años. Para mí, no envejece. Cuando conozco niñas y niños, les pregunto quiénes son sus padres y puedo ubicarlos con su familia en la comunidad.

Hubo una delegación de mujeres hace algún tiempo, quizá hace 10 años, que tomó fotos con la intención de actualizar el álbum. Nunca llegó a realizarse. ¿No sería genial poder hacerlo ahora?
