With 2 women leaders of the popular movements of El Salvador

Lorena Araujo – the current president of the Association for the Development of El Salvador, (CRIPDES), the leading movement group in El Salvador organizing the rural communities. Involved in the 80s during the war with displaced persons, Lorena has continued to be part of different decision-making spaces promoting the defense of human rights, community organizing and environmental justice.

Zulma Tobar – the El Salvador staff person/organizer for US-El Salvador Sister Cities (USESSC). With a personal history in the organized community of Cinquera, Zulma works on issues of education, environmental justice, advocacy and community organizing with rural communities through USESSC and CRIPDES.

The attacks on the social movements combined with the lack of support for the organized rural communities is severe in El Salvador. It exists in a strange paradox with popular support for President Bukele for handling the violence of the gangs With COVID it has been hard to hear the real word from the ground. This evening is a rare opportunity to learn about the situation, the resistance and solidarity efforts including our local communities under siege. (Learn more here)
