Chicago’s 2021 Bike-a-thon

Today we want to share an inspirational story from the Chicago committee, sistered with Cinquera:

Working in solidarity with other groups

For more than 20 years the Chicago-Cinquera Sister Cities committee has participated in a multi-group fundraising event—the Pedal for Peace Bike-a-thon! All participating organizations support community projects in Latin America or focus on issues affecting Latinos in Chicago.

Spearheaded by the Chicago Religious Leadership Network (CRLN), representatives from each group plan and organize the event, which traditionally takes place on the scenic bike path along Chicago’s Lakefront. Riders from all groups get donations from friends and family to sponsor them. Donations are accepted electronically (if there is an event web page) or by personal check sent by mail. The ride is followed by a big potluck meal in the park with short presentations from each group and general socializing. Donations can continue for several weeks following the celebration.

How funds raised are divided has varied over the years. Sometimes it has been on a percentage basis with groups raising less money receiving a lower percentage. Other years, the money raised has been divided equally among the groups.

The covid pandemic has dictated some adaptations to the Bike-a-thon. For the last two years, the slogan has been “Bike in Your Barrio”! Participants are urged to “Bike (Walk or Run)” in their neighborhoods or nearby bike trails; then send photos of their activity to CRLN for inclusion in a culminating virtual celebration.

Advantages of this model of group fundraising are many: the more established organization handles donations and sets up a web site with pages for each group; individuals with artistic abilities design publicity materials; those with media expertise contribute outreach methods. We are energized by participating with those working in other community justice projects. We feel, and truly are, more connected in our solidarity.

PEOPLE TO PEOPLE OCTOBER 2021

Someone lifting a bike overhead
Arms extended
Is there a shout?
or just a triumphant sigh?

A walker snapping a photo
outside favorite café
a few blocks from
favorite park
or forest preserve trail

A runner charges to hill top
Raises arms
Turns to camera

Are Condors flying overhead?
Cardinals or Orioles?
Maybe some crazy crows?
Can we amplify their calls
enough to reach the Toucans?

We know that funds will fly South
like Robbins of Midwest USA
We anticipate students
Holding diplomas over heads
Arms fully extended.
