Dear Friends,

Monday, December 10th, marked International Human Rights Day. A day that Sister Cities tries to honor 365 days a year with its work for human rights in El Salvador, Honduras and the United States. Just a few weeks ago, I returned to visit El Salvador and saw the fruits of our amazing work as a network. Although I ended my four years as Sister Cities staff in May, what I learned working in El Salvador has shaped who I am and the work I do now in immigrants rights organizing in Seattle. Our partners in CRIPDES taught me patience, determination and commitment, and to appreciate the moments of laughter and mutual support that come along on the rocky road to justice.

From Chalatenango to Wisconsin, New York to Montreal, there are thousands of Salvadorans and “gringos solidarios” standing side by side and advocating for a foreign policy that respects the rights of people, not corporations.

It is through the combined strength of our network that all of this has been achieved. You all, our supporters and committee members, provide that driving force and power.

You help advocate for justice, calling on Congressional representatives, the State Department and the Salvadoran government to take action to stop impunity, human rights violations and the damaging effects of unfair trade agreements.
You help spread information that the mainstream media doesn’t cover about the effects of destructive U.S. foreign policy in Latin America and about what we can learn from the Salvadoran social movement to better fight environmental threats, cuts to social services and militarization in our own communities in the U.S.
You provide the moral, physical and financial support that helps our sisters and brothers in Central America organize to respond to natural and man-made disasters and demand government support for sustainable grassroots development, not economic growth for a wealthy few.

This December, I am joining the more than 70 Sister Cities sustainers who give monthly donations to keep our work going, because I believe in the work of CRIPDES and the Sister Cities network.

I am writing today to ask you to join me as a Sister Cities sustainer or to send a one-time donation. I know from working at Sister Cities that every donation from $15 to $300, just like every signature on a petition or march through the streets of San Salvador, brings us that much closer to a more just and peaceful world. Join me today as we celebrate International Human Rights Day at home and abroad.

In solidarity,

Sarah Bishop
U.S. El Salvador Sister Cities Staff, 2008-2012
