Remembering Oscar Romero

As many of you may already know, last year we encouraged folks from our network to raise money (any amount!) for our Romero fundraiser.

And they sure did deliver! From a walk-a-thon to brunch with friends, from a basketball statistics bet (March madness is upon us…) to a stations of the cross display that Madison hosted to mirror their sister community Arcatao, people across the network used their creativity–while also keeping it simple!–to reach our fundraising goal.

We would like to invite anyone reading this to join us in planning their own activities for the week of March 20 to 27 to remember the 43rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Oscar Romero and support our friends in El Salvador.

As you may have heard, organizers from different places, such as Santa Marta in the department of Cabañas, have been arrested and, despite their commitment with their community, they might remain in jail for six months.

Luckily, many organizations are coming to their support.

We want to be prepared if our partners need this kind of support. Our goal is raising $5,000 to set aside as legal aid if it’s needed. As noted above, last year many from our network demonstrated that small and even personal activities can make a difference. Earlier this month, a group from our network brainstormed a bunch of ideas, from as simple as making a donation yourself, to events like a snow-shoe-a-thon. For your convenience, here are all the ideas we came up with:

  • connect with another local organization and split the donations 50/50
  • walk-a-thon, bike-a-thon, Ski-a-thon, Snowshoe-a-thon, bowl-a-thon…
  • host a party!
  • a bake sale at any event
  • passing the hat at an established event, having some printed material to say who we are and what we are doing
  • reach out to a specific group on a Facebook Family page (seeking to educate and raise funds)
  • doing a pass the hat with a group of friends who meet once a month anyway (i.e. book club)
  • have friends over to watch the film Romero and make it a fundraiser
  • simple/small events, things you would do anyway–make into a fundraiser
  • empty bowl supper with bowls made from local potters
  • Share the GoFundMe on your own social media or through email
  • Connect with local schools for students to share it out
  • t-shirts or other materials to sell
  • basketball shot/statistics
  • send in a check
  • send letters and emails to friends

All ideas are welcome. Even if it’s simply contributing $5, it will all help support the work in El Salvador. Please let us know if you need resources/support for your idea AND let us know your plans so we can share them on our social media and inspire others (email jacey.sistercities@gmail.com)!
