POPULAR RESISTANCE MOVEMENT – OCTOBER 12TH

MPR-12

For Life, Dignity and Sovereignty

 September 20, 2007

The organizations represented in the MPR-12 inform the national and international community:

  1. That the morning of September 20, 2007 as he was leaving his house the journalist Salvador Sánchez, reporter for Mayavision Radio, YSUCA Radio, and the Radio Cadena Mi Gente was brutally assassinated.
  1. Sanchez has been well recognized for his journalistic coverage, which in addition to having a high grade of objectivity and openness to demands made of the government, was based on the daily work of the social movement organizations, labor unions, and community groups, showing the reality of our country from the point of view of the people who suffer the effects of governmental policy.
  1. We are experiencing a very concerning wave of repression that has been unleashed by the Government against defenders of Human Rights who exercise and protect the Costitution, such is the case of the sentence dictated by the Judge Lucila Fuentes de Paz, in which she accepts an extension of the terms of investigation solicited by the Attorney General’s office against those captured unjustly in Suchitoto last July 2nd.  In consequence, we do not discard the idea that these recent events may be linked to the journalistic work of reporting and denouncing that Salvador Sanchez carried out.
  1. Moreover, we have observed with deep concern the growing levels of authoritarianism and further implementation of actions that can be classified as State Terrorism against persons organizations and the general population that tries to publicly denounce violations and disrespect of human rights, that hides behind the high index of violence and delinquency that rules in our society.

 For all these reasons:

  1. We demand that the Attorney General and the National Civilian Police carry out a real investigation into the events that led to the assassination of Mr. Salvador Sanchez
  1. We ask that other national and international organizations not allow that these kinds of acts continue to happen, which shut down the medium and instruments that we have to make ourselves heard, and to generate higher levels of denouncements and demands against them.
  1. We come together with the pain of the family and loved ones, knowing the irreparable loss that they have, which we will see more day by day with the absence of people like Salvador Sanchez and his high grade of human quality.

They can kill us, but our ideas survive with greater splendor

For life, dignity and sovereignty
