On May 4, the parliamentary faction of the FMLN in the Legislative Assembly and in the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) presented a document requesting that the Government of El Salvador make a statement in support of the mediation which was begun last month in Cartagena, Colombia by the Presidents of Venezuela and Colombia, Hugo Chavez and Juan Manuel Santos, respectively. This mediation aims to resolve the political conflict created in Honduras since the coup d’etat in June of 2009.

The parliamentary faction bases its petition on the importance for the region that said mediation process shows positive results. They see the mediation as necessary in order for  Honduras to return to constitutional order and so the four key proposals of the National Popular Resistance Front (FNRP) can be implemented. The four demands are: the guaranteed end of political repression and guaranteed respect for human rights, the return with full security measures for the more than 200 political exiles among them the ousted president, Manuel Zelaya Rosales, the “re-founding” of the country with a National Constituent Assembly and the recognition of the FNRP as a real political force.

In their document, the parliamentarians highlight that the Cartagena mediation has been backed by the Latin American community through a declaration released March 25th during the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the countries that are part of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) which was held in Venezuela.

The parliamentary faction of the FMLN accompanied their petition with the proposal of a public statement.
