Zulma Tobar

El Salvador Co-Coordinator

My name is Zulma Tobar. I was born in Las Flores, Chalatenango, one of the most tumultuous areas during the El Salvador´s Civil War.

When I was one year old, my mother along with dozen other families, decided to re-populate the village of Cinquera, where the Salvadoran army had destroyed every home and building, and all the crops. I grew up learning the importance of community organizing to demand our rights and to fight for social justice.

I began working with US-El Salvador Sister Cities in February 2016, and coordinate communities in the regions of CRIPDES Sur La Libertad, PROGRESO Suchitoto, and the ARDM in Cinquera.

Working with organized communities has helped me deepen my understanding of solidarity.
