The WERU-Radio Sumpul sister relationship was founded in 2003. Both organizations value the importance of radio in educating and informing communities. WERU has supported Radio Sumpul in various ways. In the past, WERU researched and created pieces for Radio Sumpul about national news in El Salvador to combat the overwhelmingly right-wing media. Radio Sumpul has been instrumental in reporting local news and organizing anti-mining initiatives. They encourage political engagement by informing and educating communities of Chalatenango.
