Arbitrary detentions and attacks on organizations
On May 18th, anti-corruption attorney Ruth Eleonora López, was arrested by police in El Salvador. López is a university professor and head of Cristosal’s anti-corruption unit who advocates for people incarcerated under the State of Exception and beyond. This arrest is one of many concerning escalations by the Bukele government against human rights defenders and their organizations.

Mining
Thorium mining would increase and aggravate the threat of metallic mining in El Salvador which could have serious ecological consequences. The passing of laws such as the Nuclear Energy Law in October, 2024 and the Metal Mining Law in December, 2024 have caused much concern. The metal mining law has been characterized as “the biggest attack on water, health, and life in El Salvador” by Asociación de Desarrollo Económico Social Santa Marta (ADES Santa Marta) (ADES).

Venezuelans Deported to El Salvador
Increased cooperation between Trump and Bukele has serious effects. March 15th, Trump used an 18th Century war-time declaration to deport over 200 Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador to be held in Bukele’s prisons for the price of 6 million dollars a year. While Trump alleged that these individuals were members of the Tren de Aragua gang, they were denied due process and deported despite the explicit order from a judge to the contrary.

Cecot and incarceration in El salvador
El Salvador is still under a State of Exception. Since 2022, this “state of emergency” has been used to detain over 85,000 people, making El Salvador the country with the highest incarceration rate in the world. The United States government is taking advantage of the lack of due process and access to legal resources in El Salvador by using CECOT as an offshore prison.

Detenciones arbitrarias y ataques contra organizaciones
El 18 de mayo, la abogada de anticorrupción Ruth Eleonora López fue arrestada por policías salvadoreños. López es una profesora universitaria y cabeza de la unidad de anticorrupción de Cristosal quien aboga por las personas encarceladas bajo el Estado de Excepción. Este arresto es sólo una de varios ataques del gobierno de Bukele contra defensores de derechos humanos y sus organizaciones.

La mineria
La minería de torio aumentaría y agravaría la amenaza de la minería metálica en El Salvador que pueda resultar en consecuencias graves para el medioambiente. La ley de Energia Nuclear de octubre de 2024 y la ley de Minería Metálica de diciembre de 2024 han causado mucha preocupacion. La ley de Minería Metálica ha sido caracterizada cómo “el mayor atentado contra el agua, la salud y la vida en El Salvador” por la Asociación de Desarrollo Económico Social Santa Marta (ADES Santa Marta) (ADES).

Venezolanos deportados a el Salvador
La cooperación entre Trump y Bukele tiene consecuencias muy serias. El 15 de marzo, Trump utilizó una declaración de guerra del siglo XVIII para deportar a más de 200 inmigrantes venezolanos a El Salvador, donde serían detenidos en las cárceles de Bukele a cambio de 6 millones de dólares al año. Aunque Trump alegó que estos individuos eran miembros de la pandilla Tren de Aragua, se les negó el debido proceso y fueron deportados a pesar de la orden explícita de un juez en contrario.

El Salvaodor todavia esta bajo el Estado de Excepcion. Desde 2022, éste “estado de emergencia” ha sido abusado para detener a más de 85,000, haciendo a El Salvador el país con la tasa de encarcelamiento más alta del mundo. El gobierno de los Estados Unidos se está aprovechando de la falta de debido proceso y acceso a recursos legales en El Salvador con su decisión de utilizar a CECOT cómo una cárcel en el extranjero.
